This page is designed to give an overview on one specific transmission as to why you will receive so much difference in prices. Research it carefully and you will find that our work and prices cannot be beat when all factors are considered. Naturally a different transmission (i.e. Dual range hydramatic, Fords, Chryslers) will be totally different.
We can buy parts from various sources and have scouted the total United States for whatever is possible. Having found that there are so many different alternatives, some good, some not so good. Many suppliers make up kits with materials that are not absolutely correct, but will work, especially in the seal area. I purchased a kit from one supplier and there was very little in it that really would have worked on a long time basis, I had to replace most of the rubber with parts that I had. It would work long enough to get the car down the road but after the vehicle was driven and the rubber got hot a few times it would shink and lose its ability to function. There are a variety of clutch options on the market. The correct material will give you smooth, controllable shifting. The after market usually will shift firm (harsh) and there is not much you can do about it.
There is one place that I purchase from that is consistently on top but it is rather expensive. For the person that is looking for absolutely correct and the finest available this is what they will invariably choose. For the car dealer trying to get a car functioning long enough to sell it they will obviously go the other way. These are decisions that are not ours to make, but we are capable of doing them either way. Remember that if you ask for a rebuilt transmission I will give a price for the best that can be done. If you want the transmission repaired, it is definitely a different situation. If you are comparing prices, make sure that you are specific in what you are expecting, for as you can see below there are a lot of varieties.
These comparisons are for a typical Jetaway Hydramatic transmission 1956-1963.
As I had a call for a transmission outright recently I will explain in detail the specific cost involved in rebuilding your core or if you do not have a core.
