The UltraOD Conversion Is no longer available
This is without a doubt one of the best changes that can be made to a Packard to make it a driveable and durable car. The 700R4 is an overdrive transmission in heavy duty applications from GM. The low gear is lower than usual, so it gives a Packard a feeling of power on take-off that is astonishing. As the transmission progresses through the gears into 4th gear which is an overdrive you are cruising at an engine RPM much lower than normal, and the Torque Convertor is a lock-up which couples the engine directly to the differential. This eliminates power loss that happens through the fluid operation of a normal Torque Convertor. It also is vibration free. See details below

About the actual Conversion

This conversion is not done with bolt on adapters. The actual 700 case front end is cut off. A bell housing configuration is machined and then welded onto the front of the 700 case. The bell housing area of the case is then machined as a total unit for both centering of operation and matching to the Packard block configuration. It is this operation that gives the unit its vibration free operation when it is installed in the vehicle. It uses a standard 700R4 torque convertor. The original drive plate is drilled to accept the 700 torque convertor and an adapter is made to align pilot to crankshaft as it pilots right into the crankshaft. This gives absolute concentricity. Adapters must be made to configure linkage and other necessary appliances on the 700 transmission. The drive shaft is adapted to use the standard slip in GM yoke. This eliminates the Bell and Trunion setup that Packard used and is getting harder and harder to work on or find parts for.

Transmissions for both the V8 and earlier straight 8 are now available.
